SHOWER THOUGHTS

WITH Sofia García Peña
Sofia García Peña is a born and raised New Yorker, model, and recent grad, where she majored in visual studies and minored in fashion studies. When she’s not on set, you can find her working as a creative assistant to Beth Hutchens at FoundRae.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU FELT INSPIRED?

I did a fit modeling job the other day with a designer I probably met about seven years ago, back when she was dating a family friend of mine. I don’t know if she would even remember this, but when I was fifteen, she invited me to attend one of her first runway shows at Fashion Week. I was just starting to experiment with my style at that age, and I remember feeling like I didn’t quite fit into my own skin—let alone with my peers or the world around me. At the same time, I was being made to feel like playing with my style was frivolous. So when I had the opportunity at that age to get a glimpse into a world where fashion was loved, cared for, and celebrated—a world full of people who wanted to see and experience it—I couldn’t have been more excited. I felt so seen, and I think, in a way, that introduction inspired some of my later work and educational choices. Years later, our paths crossed again when I began modeling for her clothing brand. Recently, I was over at her studio—she was hands-on as always, setting up lighting—and she turned around, revealing she’s pregnant! She’s having a girl. I don’t know, something about it felt very full circle. I left feeling really inspired, and I think she’s going to be a great mom.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE THE MOST ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHY?

I value my curiosity, I think it keeps my life fun.

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU THINK OTHER PEOPLE OVERVALUE?

Idols. I think there is a lot of value in looking around you and learning from your peers.

WHAT DOES THE WORD 'WELLBEING' MEAN TO YOU?

I get really caught up in the past and the future, so feeling grounded equates to wellbeing for me. I think I really need quality time with friends and family and also alone time (!!!) to feel recharged and grounded.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH WATER?

Sometimes I accidentally get my water mostly in coffee form… but I do love water! I think my nyc water tastes better than anywhere else in the world but I’m bias.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR DAILY ROUTINE, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

I neeeeed to get to sleep earlier. I believe I subconsciously procrastinate going to sleep, particularly during busy or social days, because it might be the only time I have where I feel allowed to just kind of zone out and relax as there’s nothing else I could be doing. I know I need make more time in the day for moments of stillness and rest instead. There is nothing like a goods nights sleep.

WHAT WOULD YOUR STARTER PACK INCLUDE?

Brown lip liner, Le Labo Té Noir, a Mongolian fur scarf or coat, safety pins for fixing, and a dirty martini

HAVE YOU HAD ANY INTERESTING SHOWER THOUGHTS LATELY?

I’ve been thinking about the New York City rooftop pigeon men lately—it’s such an odd, dying, or maybe already dead subculture. I recently remembered going up to the roof as a kid in Brooklyn and watching colonies of pigeons flying together in flocks at sunset. My parents told me they belonged to a man who cared for them, and I remember being fascinated by that. For a while, I thought I might have made the memory up, but then I found an old article about the pigeon men of Brooklyn!
