SHOWER THOUGHTS

WITH Ryan Babenzien
Ryan Babenzien is a two time founder, Bowie's dad and Jolie's husband

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU FELT INSPIRED?

Very recently, it was raining and I was driving around the Hamptons with my son and wife, Jolie. We were looking for puddles to drive through, and I found a bunch. My son loves watching the water splash (PSA: I did this with no other cars around). We made our way to the beach, and my son and I stood under an umbrella in the pouring rain, watching the waves. At that moment, I was inspired. I was holding him in one arm and holding an umbrella in the other hand. Most people may not find standing on a rainy beach inspirational, but I found it to be. These seemingly boring moments trigger a wave of thought and emotion for me and open up a can of questions. Will he remember this moment? Will he look back and know that everything we’re doing is with purpose and intent to enrich his life? Inspiration in its rawest form—something I’m lucky to experience often now that I have a son. I am very lucky to experience inspiration as often as I do.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE THE MOST ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHY?

I value my moral compass and my simple view on doing the right thing, even when it’s hard, which seems to happen more often these days. Frankly, doing the right thing when it’s the hardest is the moment when integrity matters most. I like to think that this is what founders and leaders need in their skill set. Otherwise, we’re just a Trump vs. Musk world, and no sane person wants that.

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU THINK OTHER PEOPLE OVERVALUE?

Fame. I had an insider seat with fame during my time working in Hollywood representing famous people. Fame, to me, is a jail without actual bars, and while the general public thinks fame is amazing and they will dedicate their lives to following their favorite celebrities’ lives, their own lives are generally unfulfilling. The general public should realize that fame comes at a huge price. Sure, they can get into the club or the restaurant of the moment, but celebrities give up the ability to have private moments in public spaces. They can't go to dinner with a friend and just relax, or sit at a baseball game without being asked for something by someone. That may seem like no big price to pay to the average citizen, but it takes a toll and can be isolating and emotionally damaging. Ironic that being so recognizable can create isolation and loneliness. I wish people invested more time in themselves and were less concerned with who had sex with who or who showed up at whatever restaurant or party.

WHAT DOES THE WORD 'WELLBEING' MEAN TO YOU?

Wellbeing is the investment in one's self. Our physical and mental health are forever interwoven, and one suffers when the other suffers, just as they benefit each other. What we eat, our physical activity, our mental clarity and balance all make up our wellbeing. Water has played a definitive role in my life and has helped me improve my wellbeing. The happiness I've received from bodies of water—from pools to oceans, hot tubs to lakes—is still giving me happiness. It's probably no coincidence that I wound up where I did with Jolie, where our focus is on improving your water as it relates to your skin, hair, and wellbeing.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH WATER?

My relationship with water began at a young age and has been a central theme of my life since I was about 3 years old. While my dad left us when I was about 8, before that, I spent summers at the beach from ages 1–4 because he was a lifeguard when school was out for the summer. I was in the ocean swimming with him at this age and was in the neighbor’s pool for hours a day in the summer until I was 12. From there, it was bodyboarding, then surfing, clamming in summers in high school. I’ve spent a lot of time in water. My respect for water is broad, and I’ve realized I could never live far from an ocean.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR DAILY ROUTINE, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

I'm fairly regimented by nature and have become even more so since my son was born. But there are days where I wish I just left the schedule and went off the rails to be more spontaneous. It's not as if I feel I'm missing out on anything, and I certainly believe you need a process to be successful, but I do think about the days when I just YOLO'd through life.

WHAT WOULD YOUR STARTER PACK INCLUDE?

A Jolie, of course, a watch with watch hands, face sunblock, a paperback copy of Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, a slice of pizza.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY INTERESTING SHOWER THOUGHTS LATELY?

It’s not that I’ve had one, per se, but I have been thinking about how Jolie will innovate around filtration and expand the range of things we filter. I’ve also been thinking about how Jolie will grow internationally. So, not singular moments of a shower thought, but consecutive shower thoughts over a period of time.
