SHOWER THOUGHTS

WITH Camille Shakirova
Camille is a Uzbek-American living in Marin County. She is the owner and silversmith behind handmade jewelry brand, Lemondropbeads. Inspired heavily by nostalgia, specifically, the kitschy details of items from our past, Camille loves to make jewelry that makes people feel fabulous.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU FELT INSPIRED?

The last time I felt inspired was a couple of hours ago while sketching out some ideas for pendants. I make sterling silver jewelry, and my work is largely inspired by nostalgia and various textures. Simply looking at an old piece of scrap fabric can send me into an "inspired spiral", as I like to call it. I think indulging in any sort of "girlhood" impulse inspires me a lot. This can include buying a vintage tutu, buying a Littlest Petshop mystery box, or even looking through my old Audrey Hepburn books; ultimately, anything that circles back to the likes of my childhood self inspires me.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE THE MOST ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHY?

My favorite thing about myself is my follow-through. If I have an idea, I will bring it to life. My follow-through allows me to explore and expand my skillset and engage in all of my wants, instead of being bound to a small subset of activities, hobbies, etc. I want to do it all, and I will!

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU THINK OTHER PEOPLE OVERVALUE?

I think people overvalue being perceived, duuuh. There are billions of people on this planet, so thinking about the various hypothetical opinions they have is too tiring. Because of this fear of being perceived a certain way, there is so much pressure placed on appearance, online presence, and what one chooses to do in their life. Everyone has their own likes and niches. I don't think some other person's opinion should cause people to repress certain things.

WHAT DOES THE WORD 'WELLBEING' MEAN TO YOU?

Wellbeing, to me, is the by-product of self-care. It's the result of taking care of yourself and the way that you react to everything outside of yourself!

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH WATER?

I associate water with clarity. Whenever I shower, swim, or even on a rainy day, it feels as though I am clearing my palette. I have always been someone who loves swimming in large bodies of water. Nothing is more magical than spending the day at your favorite beach or river followed by that end of the day, post swim and sun shower. My love for water goes beyond comfort, however. Many of the things I use in my work like pearls, vintage shells, and abalone come from various bodies of water. I am constantly moved by the versatility of water and what it has to offer. Water is all around, it's consistent, and it's forever; its size and continuity are comforting to me.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR DAILY ROUTINE, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

My screen time! It's not super high, but anything over an hour seems wasteful.

WHAT WOULD YOUR STARTER PACK INCLUDE?

My starter pack would include my red-footed tortoise (Shiro), a crazy wedged heel, miscellaneous pearls, a Betsey Johnson tutu, a gigantic matcha latte, my Caboodle toolbox, and a cast iron skillet. I'd throw in some fancy cheese too.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY INTERESTING SHOWER THOUGHTS LATELY?

I have thought a lot about why cheddar cheese is so orange recently.
