SHOWER THOUGHTS

WITH April Kayganich
April is a Los Angeles-based stylist and hair texture specialist who has been working out of her own private studio for the past 12 years. Her career has been driven by a passion to help people embrace their natural hair texture. When she's not in the studio, she spends her time outdoors, working through her reading list, and cooking.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU FELT INSPIRED?

Every day, luckily. When I’m walking in my neighborhood, at the gym, working with my clients and hearing their stories, I’m always thinking about how I can be better and how to channel that inspiration whether in the art I create at home or by changing daily practices. Inspiration is truly everywhere if we let ourselves see it.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE THE MOST ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHY?

I would say my work ethic. I dropped out of college because I wanted to pursue hair. It took me until the age of 26 to finally enroll and make it happen, going part-time and working two jobs to make ends meet. It was probably one of the hardest times of my life (I didn’t have a car either), but I kept my head down, didn’t complain, and just kept focusing on the goal. I'm so thankful for the support from my friends and loved ones during that time.

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU THINK OTHER PEOPLE OVERVALUE?

I think people overvalue what something looks like, rather than what it feels like. This can apply to so much, but if we truly just focus on being authentically ourselves and not worry about what someone else might think, it takes us out of uncomfortable feelings of not belonging or feeling like we are "weird". It’s okay to be weird or different, embrace it.

WHAT DOES THE WORD 'WELLBEING' MEAN TO YOU?

Wellbeing - I always think of prioritizing health and wellness. Being in a state of calm, peace, prioritizing self.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH WATER?

Water is magical! It helps plants grow, hydrates us, and is essential for keeping my curls (and all curls!) healthy. I love being in water, near it—you name it.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR DAILY ROUTINE, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

Oh my gosh, if I had to pick one, it would be to stretch morning and night. I found this fitness person on YouTube who has yoga classes and different types of stretches to do for post-workout, mobility, or before bed. When I do this, I feel like I sleep better—though I’m definitely not consistent with it.

WHAT WOULD YOUR STARTER PACK INCLUDE?

A book because I always have one in hand- I’m currently reading Martyr!, Hairstory Hair Balm because it’s what keeps my curls moisturized, Laneige lip mask, a silk or satin scarf for pineapple-ing my hair, electrolytes lol I love the LMNT ones the best, Mady Morrison’s YouTube (the stretches). I think that’s it!

HAVE YOU HAD ANY INTERESTING SHOWER THOUGHTS LATELY?

Hahaha, you know what? The shower is usually where I just go into my own little world of self-care—so not recently!
